another day, another project

As if we don’t have enough stuff going on around the house, we’re now in the midst of remodeling Jake’s room. I use the term ‘remodeling’ loosely. I mean, remodeling a bedroom isn’t exactly the same thing as remodeling a bathroom or kitchen, you know? Anyway, the kid’s room has been a complete mess for at least a few years–mostly due to lack of storage space. I found a really nice desk/wall unit that would be perfect for his room and should clear up the clutter. And, I’ve been meaning to get new carpeting in there for the past year. But, if we’re going to replace the carpeting, we need to replace the trim. And, if we’re going to replace the trim, we might as well paint first. And, if we’re replacing the trim, we also need new doors. So, you can see why I’m calling it a remodel.

Today, we removed a bunch of items from the room so we’d have room to work and then we ripped out the trim and doors. We took a break at one point and went to REC Carpeting in Tire Hill and picked out new carpeting. After all of that was done, we ran to Home Depot and bought some paint.

Unfortunately for Brian, the floor trim needs to be installed before the carpet can go in. It’ll be a few weeks until the carpet will be installed so he has a little time. But, I’ve been waiting 7 years (and counting) for trim in my living room and dining room, so this will be quite a feat for him. The only issue that needs to be worked out is that he is also building the doors for the bedroom. Obviously there is not enough time to do this before the carpet goes in so it will be tricky installing the floor trim without having the doors installed. Hopefully we can find a way around that.

Tomorrow I need to prep the walls for painting. If we got them painted that would be a definite plus, but I’m not counting on that at this point because I have too much other stuff to do.

home at last

Unlike our trip to Stamford, our trip home went quite smoothly. We didn’t run into any traffic issues or construction problems this time around. We got home sometime between 6:30 and 7:00–I’m too tired to remember at this point. I got most of my stuff put away and read all of the mail for the week. I even started washing clothes. However, it’s not time to put away the luggage quite yet. I have another trip coming up next month for some technical training (my new job uses a bunch of technologies I am not familiar with, so the purpose of the class is to catch me up to speed). Hopefully that will be the end of the travel for a while.

I brought this DVD with me on my trip. This movie was actually kind of cute, so I guess Will Ferrell has redeemed himself. I may have to watch another one of his movies now (but, I’m not so sure about that ice-skating one).

Thank goodness for laptops. I don’t know what people did with their time in the days before laptops and hotel internet connections.

So, here I am in Stamford. I had to come here for a week of training for my new job. Luckily, my new company hired four other people I know, so we all came up here together. I’m not much for travel to begin with, let alone having to travel alone, so that worked out rather well for me. We left yesterday after lunch and we were making excellent time until we hit some construction around Allentown. That put us back almost an hour. Then, of course, there was a bunch of traffic near New York City. That wouldn’t have been so bad, had we not just sat in traffic. But, we finally made it here around 8pm. The three others wanted to go out to eat, but I opted to stay in and order room service. All I wanted to do was hook up my computer and check my email. So, I got all hooked up, only to find there was a charge for it. Since it was so late, I decided to wait till today. Then, I found out this morning, that my company is also paying for our internet access during our stay here. So, I think they are A-OK and I will be taking them up on that offer the rest of my stay.

The hotel I’m staying in is the nicest place I’ve ever stayed in. If I ever have to come back here when Jake’s not in school, I’ll definitely bring him and Brian with me. Brian’s sister doesn’t live too far from here and we’re really close to New York City, so that’s another option for stuff to do.

I can’t believe it’s only Monday, though. I feel like I’ve been here for two weeks already. Today actually went pretty fast, but there’s still four more days to go (well, OK, hopefully more like 3 1/2, but still).

the falcon and the snowman

Have you noticed a lack of movie reviews lately? Maybe that also explains my lack of posts. Anyway, since spring is here, I cut back our Blockbuster subscription to two movies a month. Last year I cut it out entirely. But this year, I added a few TV series to our list and those will take a while to get through, so that’s why I kept it going.

Anyway, about a year ago, I read an article about Sean Penn’s film career. This was recommended as one of his best movies. While his acting was good as always, I just wasn’t into this film. It was ok, it just wasn’t that compelling. And, the movie was on the top of my Blockbuster list for like 4 months and I just received it yesterday. I think they had to go buy a new copy of it just so they could send it to me.
